The occurrence

On 8 January 2020, a Ukraine International Airlines Boeing 737-800 aircraft crashed near Tehran Imam Khomeini International Airport in Tehran, Iran. There were 176 passengers and crew on board. All were fatally injured and the aircraft was destroyed. Of the passengers who died in this tragedy, 55 were Canadian.

Pursuant to Annex 13 of the Convention on International Civil Aviation, which is governed by the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), the Aircraft Accident Investigation Board of the Civil Aviation Organization of the Islamic Republic of Iran (AAIB of Iran) is leading the investigation into the accident. In keeping with Annex 13, by virtue of fatalities to Canadian citizens, the TSB has appointed an expert who will receive and review factual information released by the State of Occurrence, and monitor the progress of the investigation. The TSB has been in direct contact with the AAIB of Iran since learning of the accident.
